New folks: Tim O'Connor (St. Julie Asian Center) - new instructor / site coordinator & Osvalda Rodrigues (MAPS) - Project Director

  1. Announcements

YWCA - Acre Youth Ctr will begin after-school program in next two weeks and will partner with a Weed & Seed - Tech Seed Grant to put new equipment into place at its Acre Youth Center Site. CMAA - will begin the setup of its new lab early next week. Classes started beginning of September. Classes held T/Th 9am-12, M/W/F in the evenings and Saturdays 9-12. MAPS - lab is setup and classes in Portuguese will start in the next couple of weeks Pathfinders / LTLC - will have 2 labs and will start classes on 10/2 St. Julie Asian Center - has started ESL classes and will begin tech lab setup week of 9/25 CIRCLE - receiving 2-3 new computers. Revamping their space and program. Will be receiving 7-8 additional computers from North Campus House of Hope - Children's computer is in place and a 2nd will be setup in the next couple of days. Need more adult computers. Looking to get materials for GED and K-12. Girls, Inc. - All set. Still looking for staff. Want to setup morning classes for teens CMAA - 16th Anniversary party will be held 10/21 at the Doubletree from 7pm-12am. $35 a ticket. Connectivity issues - New Beginnigs has ATT Broadband @ 300kbps for $179/mo, CMAA has upgraded to T1, Girls, Inc. looking into DSL and Consortium WAN option

  1. Current issues

Tech - group would like models of equiment for basic low, mid & high end setup. Resources for solving problems such as software installs and drivers. Recruitment - Dan MacNeil has reviewed 25 resumes and interview 8 people. 2 reasonable candidates submitted to UTEC, 1 to Girls, Inc., and 4 to the Y. St. Julie has hired one of these folks. Recruiting through Sun, UML - Computer Science Department, UML- Art Department, personal network. MAPS has located instructor as well. Felicia will submit another add in the Sun. Education - see attachment Outreach - Have been working with UML-CS department to work on community tech projects, Dan presented to art department for volunteers, will present to UML Honors program for volunteers, Kevin & Felicia will presented GLNPLF a forum on technology planning PR - Have documentary team in place. Was suggested that perhaps the group through a couple of community events such as a technology fair. Funding - Felicia submitting grant to Verizon on behalf of Consortium. Will resubmit to Cisco. Group suggested that we begin a round of brown bag lunches with local corporations to introduce them to the Consortium and its members. Working Groups Information - Kevin Mullen will head up - initial meeting set for October 5th 9:30am @ CFWC Education - Chris McClure will send out posting to get meeting date Technology - Felicia will send out posting to set up meeting date

Special Meeting for DOE recipents will be held on 10/2 @ 1pm at UTEC Special Meeting of VISTA hosts - not scheduled

  1. YWCA: An Overview

Offers day care, home services, afterschool programs, summer day camp, tobacco education and anit-smoking advocacy, computer programs, and other supports for particularly young women and girls Two youth centers in the Acre and Lower Belvidere neighborhoods Starting up again the City Streets Teen Theatre Focus is on Community service and civic involvement - activities such as transforming and building a local playground, meeting with city councillors, creating a community garden space all highlight this focus Serve about 350 youth ranging from 5-19 years old Right now looking at youth violence and getting young people to perform out in the community Very willing to collaborate. Have and do work with Girls, Inc. (Girls, with Goals), UTEC (Computer Training) and Big Brother / Big Sister among others.

Training Issues for the Lowell Community Technology Consortium

The Lowell Community Technology Consortium has a wide range of training / education needs for staff, volunteers and interns involved in technology education programs. The Train-the-Trainer series would target mainly the technology manager / educators at various Consortium member sites. However, others in the community would be welcome to participate, especially those who wish to contribute to community technology programs.

Seminar Series

Modular. Realtime presentations of about 2 hours as well as online materials for future support, reference, and refresher. Offered throughout the year.

Intensive Workshops

Held over a 1-2 week period. 12 hours of instruction w/ online materials for future support, reference, and refresher. Offered 1 to 2 times over the year.

Train-the-Trainer - would cover a wide range of issues similar to those in current train-the-trainer syllabus Train-the-Technician - geared towards giving a foundation in troubleshooting techniques, PC maintenance & Repair, Networking

Study Groups / Learning Projects

These are independent learning opportunities guided by current staff / volunteers in the Consoritum.
