Lowell Community Technology Consortium - Recycling Program
7/18/01 (UML - Eng402 - Professional Development Training Location)

Host:  Dan MacNeil

Present:   Patrick Chieh (individual), David Crist (Pathfinders), Gregg Croteau (UTEC), Eduardo Czarnobai (LTC), Carol Langevin (MRC), Chris McClure (Pathfinders), Isaias Rodrigues (UTEC), Mickey Sin (RRC), Sothea Sui (RRC), Felicia Sullivan (LTC), Virac Tep (RRC), Ed West (MRC/RRC),

Issues surrounding recycling to explore:

  • What resources are available
  • What is the process to donate computers and to acquire one, who refurbishes them
  • Who gets the refurbished computers- is there a controlling agency
  • What Operating System will be used – will there be a standard across agencies

-Discussion around Goodwill as lead agency as they have space and already accept any computer and have labor and testing equipment

-If there was a lead agency, what would the ownership guidelines be- how do we accept and give out computers, deal with larger donations

-LTC or the Consortium could serve as a coordinating agency in terms of a database, resources and software

-Discussion surrounding standards:

  • Reporting what we have
  • Maintaining inventory
  • Who is eligible to receive a computer
  • What services would come with purchasing a computer – one month warranty, training on how to use, troubleshoot
  • What investment in the process will a recipient have: volunteering 10 hours for consortium agency, taking part in refurbishing the computer – PC training and repair
  • Sharing HR – VISTAs and volunteers with technical skills

 Action items:

  1. Set up a meeting with Goodwill
  2. Develop a reporting mechanism – database form with standardized information so the Consortium knows who is running what type of program and what their resources are
  3. Develop publishing mechanism to inform Consortium

Agencies currently working on recycling:

  1. Goodwill: they will take any computer, for a $10 fee
  2. Pathfinders: Storage capacity, rehab and give to residents
  3. UTEC: Technology goes home program

-Felicia will set up meeting with Goodwill
-David will investigate licensing of Operating Systems and requirements
